Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

SEO gets you into a list of links. Answer Engine Optimisation gets you into the answer — named and quoted when a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Copilot for a recommendation.

The short answer

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of getting a business named and quoted inside an AI-generated answer, rather than ranked in a list of links. It rests on four levers: being in the search index the engine reads; publishing answer-shaped content that responds directly to the question the model asks; being an unambiguous entity; and being corroborated by independent third-party sources. The first lever is a gate — below it, none of the others return anything.

The four steps to getting cited by AI: index, retrieve, extract, attribute Diagram of how an AI engine decides who to cite. Step 1 the engine rewrites the user question into its own search query. Step 2 it sends that query to a search index such as Bing, Google, Brave or its own. Step 3 it reads the returned pages. Step 4 it quotes and attributes the page that most directly answers the question. To get cited by AI you must survive all four steps. How an AI engine decides who to cite1. AEO and GEO are used almost interchangeably in practice, and the distinction matters less than the shift underneath both: the user is no longer given a list to choose from. They are given an answer. If you are not in the answer, there is no list to be tenth in.

The four levers of Answer Engine Optimisation

  1. Index membership. The gate. Each engine reads a different index — see which. Below this gate, nothing else you do returns anything.
  2. Answer-shaped content. The engine rewrites the user’s question into its own query, then quotes whatever answers it most directly. Question-shaped headings; a clean 40–60 word factual answer immediately beneath.
  3. Entity clarity. The engine must be able to identify who you are without ambiguity. Structured data, consistent naming everywhere, and a disambiguation page if a similarly named business exists.
  4. Third-party corroboration. Engines cross-reference. They rarely take a company’s word for its own legitimacy. Independent pages that name you and your URL together are what turn a claim into a fact.

What AEO is not

How to start

  1. Check all four index memberships — Google, Bing, Perplexity, Brave.
  2. Open your robots.txt and confirm every AI crawler is allowed.
  3. Write down the ten questions your customers actually ask. Build one answer-shaped page per question.
  4. Fix your entity: consistent name, consistent URL, structured data, correct Google Business Profile category.
  5. Measure per engine, across multiple runs. One run is noise.

Frequently asked

What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimisation is the practice of getting a business named and quoted inside an AI-generated answer rather than ranked in a list of links. It rests on four levers: index membership, answer-shaped content, entity clarity, and third-party corroboration.

What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) aim to have your business named and quoted inside a generated answer. AEO and GEO are used largely interchangeably; the shift underneath both is that the user is given an answer rather than a list.

Does SEO still matter for AI citations?

Partly. Index membership overlaps — Gemini and Google AI Overviews are grounded in Google's index, so Google SEO transfers there. But ChatGPT and Copilot read Bing, Perplexity reads its own index and Claude reads Brave, so Google-only SEO leaves three of the major engines untouched.

Can AEO guarantee my business gets cited?

No. In our July 2026 testing on a clean surface the AI answer changed 27.8% of the time with no intervention at all. At that level of engine noise, a guaranteed citation is not something an honest operator can promise.
